What is considered failing UMD? ›

Undergraduate academic performance is based on a student's grade point average (GPA). Students are required to achieve a 2.0 GPA to maintain satisfactory academic progress. A GPA under 2.0 is considered unsatisfactory performance.

On a 4.0 scale, an A equals 4.0, a B equals 3.0, a C equals 2.0, a D equals 1.0, and an F equals 0.0. However, some high schools report student GPAs on a 5.0 scale instead. When schools use a 5.0 scale, a 4.5 GPA on a 5.0 scale is the equivalent of a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

In 2016 their early action acceptance rate was 48.1%, while just six years later in 2022 it was 44%. This has changed how many people view UMD. It's no longer a safety school but a target instead. This year, many WJ students have put in mass amounts of hard work to ensure their acceptance to UMD.

At UMD, we value all of your strengths and talents. We know there is more to you than grades and SAT scores. While they are important, we also want to know about your interests and background and what makes you unique.

While UMD tracks who visits campus during official tours, we do not track demonstrated interest and it is not considered in the admissions process. Legacy status is also not taken into account when evaluating applicants. Instead, UMD bases its admissions decisions on 26 review factors.

GPA and Academic Requirements

The 3.0 GPA requirement is a consistent standard across the Honors College, including living-learning programs. A minimum 3.2 GPA is required to earn the Honors College citation. Individual programs may have additional program-specific requirements.

B (80-89%) – High level of achievement. C (70-79%) – Satisfactory level of achievement. D (60-69%) – Low level of achievement. E (59% or lower) – Failure (no credit awarded for high school credited courses)

Depending on the grading scale of a college or university, anything below 70% is considered failed. However, there are colleges and universities that have different standards and designate grades below 60% as failing.

The normal grading range is from 55 to 100. The number grades correspond to letter grades as reflected in the chart below. The minimum passing grade is 70 (C). Any grades between 55 and 69 (D and F) are considered failing grades for which unit credit is not earned.

Grading Options and Minimum Grades

While a minimum grade of D- is required for all General Education courses, a minimum grade of C- must be earned in all courses required by the major. If a grade falls below the minimum the course must be repeated or with the advisor's permission another course may be substituted.
